LANAP ~ Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure

Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure> LANAP

Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, also known as “LANAP”, is a minimally invasive technique that integrates the precision of laser technology into the traditional scaling and root planning procedure to enhance the treatment of gum (Periodontal) disease. The goals of using this modern approach are to improve overall outcomes, be less invasive and promote faster healing. Discuss this option with your dentist to discover whether this technique is appropriate for your needs.

What does LANAP involve?

Traditional Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) is a non-surgical deep cleaning procedure where a dentist or hygienist uses special tools to remove tartar and plaque from your gum line, down to the roots of each tooth.

In root planing, the tooth root’s surface is smoothed to prevent bacteria from attaching and encourages the gums to heal and reattach to the teeth.

In Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedures (LANAP) lasers are used to target and remove diseased or inflamed gum tissue within the periodontal pockets to create easier access for the dentist to more thoroughly scale and plane roots.

These precise lasers also help seal the gum tissue around the tooth after cleaning to stimulate bone and tissue regeneration, and facilitates a faster healing process through reducing bacteria, bleeding, and the risk of infection.

Laser therapy is not a stand alone treatment, as it is generally used in conjunction with scaling and root planing, not as a replacement for it. The physical removal of plaque and tartar is still crucial.
