Deep Cleaning / Scaling and Root Planing
Deep cleaning removes plaque and hardened tartar from below the gumline, then smooths the tooth roots so the gums can heal and fit more tightly around the teeth. It is used when a regular cleaning can no longer reach the bacteria trapped inside deeper gum pockets.
Without treatment, gum disease usually progresses: pockets deepen, supporting bone is permanently lost, and teeth may eventually become loose or require extraction. About 4 in 10 U.S. adults age 30 or older have some level of periodontitis, and advanced gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss; treating it earlier is generally simpler and less costly than later surgery, tooth replacement, or dentures.
Gum health is also connected with overall health. Diabetes can make gum disease more severe, while untreated gum inflammation may make blood sugar harder to control; after treatment, mild tenderness or sensitivity may occur for several days, but this is usually temporary.
